“The very effort to “become” is a barrier because you are already carrying your being with you” – Osho, Creativity
“I want to become this amazing husband”
“I want to become employee of the month”
“I want to become a successful entrepreneur”
“I want to become successful with women”
People focus too much on the end result. On the finish line. What is the difference between you “now” and you “then”?
Those come and go. Today you could be a successful entrepreneur making millions and next year you could live just to barely make ends meet (true story). Does that mean that you are not an entrepreneur anymore deep inside? No, it’s only the rules of the game that have changed. Therefore, the idea of becoming is totally dependent on external factors that are always fluctuating and may or may not work in your favour.
The greatest people and the biggest achievers never needed to “become” something, they already knew they had greatness inside of them so they focused on “being” instead, by putting in the dedication and hard work each day into their craft. When they became “someone” that was actually the world just catching up with their greatness.
The idea of wanting something takes you away from being, it’s the biggest barrier because it means that now in this very instant you are desiring something, and having desire means you’re lacking, that you are incomplete, that you are less than you are.
As far as we are all concerned, you are “yourself”, there’s nothing to be found, you are just not aware of it.
By longing to find yourself, you create tension. You project yourself to be in the future, kidnapped from the present moment. You imagine yourself as something other than you are and this just increases the tension. Birds are not tense, fish are not tense, trees are not tense because they are not aware of any other states, they are present. They are living in the present moment not in imagination.
You are already born enlightened. You are already born carrying your entire being with you. But before you can become fully aware of it you are labeled by external factors:
“You have to grow up to be this and that because that’s what’s hot now”.
“You have to act like this if you don’t want to upset people”.
”You will be a great doctor and make our family so proud”.
Before you had a chance to look inside, these labels have distracted you from just being and focused it on finding yourself, on becoming something else.
Becoming never has an end. There is always another hill to conquer, another goal to attain, another desire to fulfill. Desire is never ending and people are caught in this constant chase of shadows all their lives only to realize that one thing is actually ending: life. Ultimately the comfort a pharaoh’s body feels in the grave is the same as the corpse of a beggar. That is the ultimate form of finding yourself, which is no different from anyone else’s.
You can desire other things in life, but longing to find yourself means becoming a stranger with your own being.
I know this might sound wishy-washy but think about it for a second and you will feel it’s true even if you can’t put it in words. When you acknowledge this, you stop searching, you are carrying yourself with you already and now you are just pursuing to project your being onto the world instead of receiving it from the world. You decide who you are.
There’s this quote that says: “Fake it till you make it”. That’s not true. Your blood, sweat, and hard work has nothing to do with faking it. Instead:
Make it till they get it
Finding yourself takes you away from being yourself.
You are already here.
We just need to catch up with your greatness.
